compliment : 칭찬, 감탄 존경을 나타내는 찬사의 뜻입니다

complement : 보완하다, 완성하다, 어떤것의 상태를 보완하거나 추가함으로써 완성되거나 개선되는 상태를 뜻합니다

 

예문에 적용해 보면

 

compliment : 칭찬

 

- She blushed at the compliment from the gentlemen.

- The judge complimented Kim's piano playing.

 

complement : 보완하다, 완성하다

- The flowers were a perfect complement to the living room.

- The being curtains complement the color of the carpet nicely.

 

칭찬할때는 compliment, 추가하여 보완하거나 완성할때 complement.

 

여기서 complimentary 형용사로 칭찬하는 뜻도 있지만, 무료의 라는 형용사의 뜻도 가진다

이게 가끔 시험에 나와서 헛갈리게 하는데, 무료의 complimentary.

미국 호텔에 가면 방안에 있는 생수에 complimentary 라고 적힌 종이를 생수병에 꽂아진걸 볼 수 있는데, 

그냥 for free 라고 하지라는 생각이 들게 만들어주는, 알아두면 유용한 단어 complimentary.
